For its tourists to be able to briefly forget the urban bustle, a large city like Barcelona has to have green spaces that are connected to nature. Thankfully, Barcelona is home to a huge network of urban parks and gardens that are deeply rooted in its history, culture, and arts.
Ciutadella, the biggest and one of the oldest parks in Barcelona, is one of the most well-liked public spaces. Felipe V gave the order to plan and build a park on the grounds of the enormous fortification from 1715. The Luxembourg Gardens in Paris, 1872, are the inspiration for this park. It hosted the World Exposition event in 1988, and it was expanded to include a zoo in 1892.
It is a calm sanctuary with amazing features like its unexpected waterfall, a pond that can be navigated, a lovely greenhouse, and appealing landmarks like the Castle of the Three Dragons. Some of its top attractions include beautiful, centuries-old plant varieties, a wide variety of birds, and well-known monuments like the life-size stone mammoth.
The second largest park in Barcelona is the very contemporary Central de Nou Barris Park. Its design emphasizes sustainability by providing water and vegetation a prominent role. More than 1,500 trees from more than 30 species may be seen in this park. There are several decorative fountains throughout the city, as well as a singular palm grove. One of the aqueducts that supplied water to Barcelona during the 19th century is one of its most notable historical elements.
Another one of the huge urban green places that merits sustainable development is Diagonal Mar. Its enormous seven zones are perfect for bicycling exploration, yet they are all connected by the same concept: water. The park is laid up such that it runs across grassy slopes and eventually joins the sea.
The majestic Güell Park in Barcelona must be the most well-known of the city’s parks. This is true even if we only consider the “bare mountain” region, which is characterized by the vast Gaud and features iconic landmarks like the dragon’s stairway and the Sala Hipóstila covered plaza. However, because it features a sizable forest full of trees and birds, as well as picnic spaces and playgrounds, it is much more than that as a park.
Laberinto de Horta, which was created in 1792, is another park with a historical feel. The well-known flora labyrinth and cypresses are the source of its name. It is a beautiful landscape full of flowerbeds, tall trees, and sights like a waterfall and the Sovereign Tower, a historic building from the 14th century that was redecorated in the 19th century in the arabesque style.
