If you live with someone who has a handicap or mobility issues, you may have seen the numerous obstacles that their daily existence presents. Living in a home that hasn’t been modified to meet their requirements can be particularly challenging. It is your responsibility to modify the home in a way that will make your impaired loved one’s life safer and easier. We wish to discuss how you might set up your home to produce an appropriate environment because of this.
1. Stair lift
If there are steps connecting each level of your home that has more than one, you should ideally construct an elevator or stair lift. The second alternative would be more cost-effective and a better investment for bigger spaces.
2. Extend doors and hallways
The entry doors and hallways will need to be made wider so that the person in a wheelchair may freely access and depart the bedrooms, bathrooms, and other areas of the house. The hallway must provide pivot points, thus each door must be at least 80 centimeters wide and 120 centimeters wide or wider. Bells, light switches, and doorknobs should all be positioned at a reasonable height.
3. Shower trays in the bathroom
The best way for the disabled to maintain their independence when it comes to taking care of their personal hygiene is to place a shower tray in the bathroom. These trays are at ground level so the disabled won’t need to go on any steps to access the tray.
4. Furniture with rounded edges and home automation systems
The furniture’s rounded edges shield the impaired person from accidents when passing or tripping over the item. Installing home automation systems is also a smart move given that many different aspects of the house can be managed via a smartphone or other electronic device.
5. Customized and adjustable beds
In addition to home automation systems, it is crucial to install an adjustable bed with a customized mattress in a space that is at least 120 centimeters wide so that the handicapped person may get onto the bed without help from a caregiver or with help.
